The next month i will start an internship in Zurich as AI engineer.
An opportunity i've dreamed of the past few years.
My journey as an engineer has been more full of up-and-downs as it should normally be. It began without a clear intention, and it was completed thanks to the people who inspired me when giving up seemed to be the only way out.
Talking about inspiration, i believe that knowing life stories of people who do what you aspire to is the ultimate motivation. Seeing that a person somewhere in the world is doing what the people right now around you doesn't even dream of. During high school i felt stuck in an environment full of mediocre people unconsciously leads me to believe that trying to be exceptional is a just waste of time. But i did't imagined that i was mediocrity, it was just normal. Youtube and the exposure of inspiring people was THE thing that made me grow the most as a person. When you are young and naive it's hard to identify fluff from real valuable information. I rememmber i've stumbled upon trading courses, then i've also been interested in cryptos and followed also the stupid trend of NFTs. Fortunately i was pretty young at the time and i've lost practically no money. While I was trying a bit in vain to find my way, I made on right choice: studying computer engineering. At the time i wasn't even sure i would have completed it, but looking back having gained the knowledge to orient myself and have the tools to create stuff had ben the ultimate investment.
Coming back to the point i wanted to stress more. I fell like that the sense of respect and gratitude in this field (CS) is unreplicated in any other engineering field. You have patent vs open-source code, and in general there is not that sence of globally sharing the achievements. Also because the initial cost of writing software is close to zero while for example playing around with making rockets is a much more expensive game.
I've spent the past week at home, and i had the pleasure to talk about the future of society and ai with my brother who is a painter, and some of my friends who have a very peculiar life story: one studied history and another philosophy and is now a powerlifter and coach. In those situations i feel like that the silly idea of Douglas Adams of the Earth from the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is somehow correct, having different passions is one of the most human aspects of life, and being inspired by people with distinct knowledge and skills is so rewarding. I also believe that as a thought thinking exercise, it's very enriching. Through dialogue and sharing thoughts, new knowledge is created. I also had the pleasure to reevaluate the humanities, which I've always considered less responsible of technological advancement, almost as a secondary tool. I'm also becoming more interested in art and the ability to write and communicate thoughts clearly and, above all, with extremely clear intention.
Those belief made me think that the society in the future will be guided by multidisciplinary people with diverse skills and passions instead of people with skills limited to a single plane of knowledge. A bit like moving from a linear to a quadratic model, it significantly increases the scope of knowledge and the overall amount of insight one can generate you can touch point in the space that were previously unreachable.
This is the reason i've started this blog, tho share my thoughts about future, society, technology and of course ai. I'm planning some videos, and story about my future experience in Zurich so stay tuned. I hope that those word may help kids younger than me find their way.
